Three Tips to Start Cultivating Your Mental Health Today
May 19, 2014
In honor of National Mental Health Month, we encourage everyone to learn steps they can take to protect their mental health, and balance mind and body. We interviewed Epiphany Center’s Family Treatment Center Director and clinical psychologist, Dr. Linda Perez, PhD for her sought-after advice.
1. “Be in relationship,” says Dr. Perez. “By that, I mean, approach life from a place of understanding others versus blaming.”
2. Practice self-care. Learn how to cope without substances, be they cigarettes, food, or drugs.
3. Self-reflect versus react. Be mindful and aware of your thoughts and feelings as you act in relationships. “In my weekly class, I ask students to keep a log of triggers: what they were thinking and feeling during intense situations. They can then use the log to prepare for next time,” says Dr. Perez.
