Epiphany Center Celebrates the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul

October 4, 2019

On September 27th, residents and staff joined to honor and celebrate the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul (1581 – 1660) with a little history and ice cream!

Executive Director Sister Betty Marie, D.C. invited everyone to watch a short video on the life and work of St. Vincent de Paul and his charity and compassion for the poor. It is a beautiful story. Along with St. Vincent de Paul, St. Louise de Marillac founded the Daughters of Charity, a community of over 18,000 women devoted to serving the poor and sick in more than 94 countries.

Epiphany Center is a ministry of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and has a rich heritage of serving San Francisco’s most vulnerable families. This year marks Epiphany Center’s and the Daughters of Charity 167th year in San Francisco.

Sister Betty Marie read and reflected on a quote from St. Vincent de Paul:

God allows us to give rise to the practice of two beautiful virtues:
perseverance, which leads us to attain the goal, and
constancy, which helps us to overcome difficulties.

The feast day celebration set the scene for our two Vincentian volunteers, both working in Adult Services, Jennie Lynn Martino and Blaire Dahl to introduce themselves and give a brief overview of their academic backgrounds, interests, and what led them to become Vincentian Service Corps volunteers. Staff and residents felt inspired by their commitment to service to others, especially as these two volunteers work alongside Epiphany staff each day to give our residents a place and the opportunity to heal, recover and grow.

With this service to others in mind, the Epiphany community celebrated the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul, strengthened their connection to one another, enjoyed delicious ice cream, and then returned to the meaningful work of putting our Vincentian mission and values into practice.
